We will send you a questionnaire to fill in and return to us.

School age children need to be referred directly to the CAMHS service for NHS assessment from the school. If a Right to Choose referral is requested for a child then it would still be helpful to include a statement from the school.

Due to current waiting times, local NHS services may be unable to accept referrals at present. However, patients may still be able to access assessment services through the NHS Right to Choose pathway.
If your GP considers a referral appropriate, they can send a referral directly to your nominated provider at your request. Once the referral has been submitted, any queries regarding appointments, waiting times, or assessment processes should be directed to the provider.

Although these services are NHS-funded and free to patients, many Right to Choose providers are independent companies contracted by the NHS to deliver assessments and treatment.

Choosing a Right to Choose Provider

Your GP cannot choose a provider on your behalf. Patients are responsible for researching available providers and selecting the service most appropriate for their needs.

Once you have selected a provider, please contact the practice with the details and we will advise you on the next steps.

Useful sources of information include:

  • Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust – ADHD and Autism for Children and Young People
  • ADHD UK
  • NHS ADHD Information
  • National Autistic Society
  • NHS Autism Information

Referral Process

Right to Choose providers often have different referral procedures and documentation requirements.

Most providers require a core set of information. For ADHD referrals, patients may be asked to complete:

  • A referral questionnaire
  • A standardised self-assessment form

Diagnosis, Medication and Follow-Up Care

Some providers may request investigations such as:

  • Blood tests
  • ECGs (heart tracings)
  • Weight and height measurements

These investigations should be arranged directly by the provider themselves.

Some providers can initiate and titrate medication and it would be important to research this while choosing the provider.

Waiting Times and Treatment Expectations

Your GP practice has no control over local NHS waiting times for ADHD or ASD services.

Important Considerations

Many Right to Choose providers operate as independent businesses. In some circumstances, providers may:

  • Stop trading
  • Lose their NHS contract
  • Change the services they offer
