Berkshire Bowel Cancer Screening
Starting April 08
Approval has recently been gained to offer Bowel Cancer Screening to the population of Berkshire aged between 60 and 69 years. The programme will not be applicable to all patients particularly if they have had previous bowel problems.
An invitation letter will be sent to patients by the Hub in Guildford informing them that they will be sent a faecal occult blood (FOB) test kit for them to complete in the privacy of their own home. Two weeks later the patients will receive a further letter together with a test kit and instructions as to how to use this. The kit is then returned in a freepost envelope to the Hub in Guildford.
Results will normally be sent to the patient within a week
Outside Surgery opening hours the West Berkshire PCT is responsible for commissioning medical cover and this is provided by the Westcall Service.
If you require emergency medical advice outside surgery hours you should ring Westcall on telephone 01189-787811.
If you require emergency dental advice outside surgery hours you should ring 0845 6020 701. You will be given appropriate advice or arrangements will be made to see you if necessary.
Westcall is an out of hours service operated by the Health Authorities of West Berkshire. This service is provided from an emergency medical centre in a wing of the West Berks Community Hospital, and patients can be seen there or at home if deemed medically necessary.
Alternatively you may prefer to seek advice from nurses at the NHS telephone help line, called NHSdirect on 0845 4647. Details of local information provided by NHSdirect can be accessed via their website - www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk. Call them to receive advice on many general medical topics or specific problems where you are unsure about how to manage things yourself.
