New PPG micro-site now live

SurgeryPod - We are currently trialling this device in the Patient Information Room. It is a computer directly linked to your records, and allows you to enter data such as smoking and BP, as well as complete assessments for depression, alcohol consumption etc. We hope this will prove popular allowing more time to be freed up for those who need it with the doctors and nurses.

vPPG - We are looking to recruit a number of patients to join our Patient Participation Group. You have two options, either to become a "full" member, or to join the virtual PPG, an online mailing list contributing comments. Please contact the PPG directly or ring and speak to Wendy in Reception

Minor Surgery
The Surgery carries out minor surgical procedures and is happy to offer you advice on 'lumps and bumps' and arrange their removal if necessary.

Diabetes
Our specialist nurses hold diabetic clinics most weeks. All diabetics are encouraged to attend annually for checkups. You will be called for by a member of the surgery each year. You will have a review of your treatment and general health regarding your diabetes as well as an eye check and chiropody check on your feet, and it is a time when any questions you or your family have can be answered. The annual review usually takes about an hour.

Minor Illness
Clinics are run by our Senior Practice Nurse and can deal with minor ailments including, insect bites, cystitis, thrush, hay fever, emergency contraception, conjunctivitis, throats, and ears.

Heart Disease
All patients with established heart disease (Heart attack, angina, coronary surgery etc) are encouraged to attend our annual Heart Clinics run by our specially trained Heart Nurse. You will have a blood test prior to coming to the clinic and the Nurse will assess and discuss with you how to improve your lifestyle and minimise the risk of further problems. She will also refer you to your doctor for further care if needed.

Flu Clinics.
Clinics are organised in the autumn of each year. Injections are offered to patients who are at particular risk for example, carer's, patients who are 65 years and over, diabetics, asthmatics, patients with long standing kidney, liver or chest complaints. Please ask your doctor for advice as required. All patients over 65 are also offered a pneumococcal vaccination.

Asthma
The asthma specialist nurses, who work under the supervision of the doctors, are available for advice and the treatment of asthma during normal surgery times. All asthmatic patients are encouraged to book for a periodic review.

Well Person Clinic
Here you can have your blood pressure taken, discuss your diet and exercise and think about other aspects of your health. This is especially relevant if you don't come to the doctors very often. Please book an appointment with the nurse via reception.

Family Planning
All the doctors and our family planning trained nurses are happy to advise you about all aspects of family planning, pre-conception care and contraception. All methods can be discussed and the best option for you arranged. Dr Hall and Dr Peter fits the coils in their clinic at the Surgery. If you are on the pill you are asked to see the doctor every six months for a check and blood pressure review before getting more pills. You may also ask to see the nurse for "repeat pill checks" every alternate time if you are safe and well on a contraceptive pill.

Smears
We encourage all women between 25 and 65 to attend for cervical smears, as it is a very good way of picking up cervical cancer at an early stage. You should book to see one of our trained practice nurses for a smear test, if you know one is due or have received a reminder letter. This is usually every 3 years to 35yrs old, then 5 yrly thereafter, or more frequently if you have had problems previously. As a matter of routine we always write to every woman with their smear result, though the lab takes up to 6 weeks to process the test.

Immunisations
The doctors believe very strongly that childhood immunisations are very important. Every child should be immunised as soon as possible to get maximum protection. There are very few reasons why most children cannot be immunised. Immunisations are carried out in on the Surgery premises by our Practice Nurse Team.

Travel Advice
Our practice nurses are highly experienced in giving travel advice and discussing the necessary immunisations etc. required for travel abroad. Generally the best thing is to ring the nurses up as soon as you have fixed your itinerary, with details of where you are going (including any remote "side trips", and also the time of year you are travelling. They can then tell you what you need to have, and plan a schedule for when these need to be done.

Stop Smoking Advice
The service is free and based on an evidence based programme. Nicotine Replacement Therapy is available as appropriate on prescription. Off-site appointments are held in various locations within the District, further details can be obtained from the receptionist.
