Some thoughts to help you minimise the risks in your home
• Are your floors uneven and slippery
• Do your carpets and rugs need replacing or sticking down
• Is your lighting bright enough (100 watt bulb recommended for stairs)
• Are your electricity sockets overloaded
• Do you have a smoke alarm
• Are there cluttered areas in your home which may hamper walking aids
• Would support rails help in some areas
• Does your eyesight allow you to read labels on medicine bottles
If you are concerned that you may fall because of these or similar reasons your Elderly Care Co- ordinator may be able to offer advice.
If you are concerned that you may fall because of health difficulties, e.g. dizzy spells, poor balance, weak joints, you can talk to your doctor or practice/district nurse.
If you meet their criteria, Social Services will be able to do an assessment of your needs which may lead to the provision of aids, e.g. raised toilet seats, grab rails. Telephone 0845 6014726
